Chapter 9 – Dynamic Catalysis

This chapter discusses transient kinetics and different relaxation methods, including steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis, which is a combination of steady-state and transient techniques. Temperature-programmed methods, such as temperature-programmed desorption, are quantitatively treated. Special attention is devoted to oscillating reactions. Stability analysis and conditions for formation of self-sustained oscillations are presented. Complex dynamic behavior in homogeneous (eg, Belousov-Zhabotinsky reactions), enzymatic, and heterogeneous catalytic reactions is mathematically treated, considering the chemical nature of these systems. Dynamic kinetic models for different cases of activation/inactivation/deactivation invoking in situ site generation, phase changes, coking, poisoning, and sintering are described.
