Treatment of a Child with Behcet's Syndrome with Transfer Factor

1976
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses results of experiments conducted to study treatment of a child with Behcet's syndrome with transfer factor (TF). The team selected a 14-year-old Caucasian girl with Behcet's syndrome for evaluation and treatment with TF. During her hospitalization, vesicular and ulcerating oral and vaginal lesions were first noted. The tests suggested that bacteria, fungi, or viruses could not be demonstrated in the initial biopsy either by direct isolation or by morphologic studies. The biopsy showed superficial ulceration, chronic inflammation and vasculitis involving many submucosal and deeper arterioles and venules. The second biopsy demonstrated slight focal, acute, submucosal inflammation without vasculitis. The results showed that although markedly elevated fibrinogen levels have been observed in patients with Behcet's syndrome presenting with thrombophlebitis, the selected patient did not have thrombophlebitis. It resulted in the speculation on the role of the coagulation sequence in the pathogenesis of the vasculitis in this disease, seen especially during exacerbations.
