The Exchange: An End to the War of the Words

2016
Margaret Kutcher of the Information Ser vices Department of the New Mexico State li brary recently sent us a copy of an article on the "Symbol of Infamy," which appeared in the March-April 1971 issue of Leaves, a bi monthly publication of the Marianhill Fathers. The article, reprinted from the July 1970 issue of the Free State Warrior published by the American Legion of Maryland, explains that, ever since 64 A.D., when Nero allowed Simon Peter to be crucified in an upside-down posi tion, the upside-down, broken arms cross has been a symbol of the Anti-Christ. The article goes on to mention several such historical uses of the symbol and concludes that those who use it "must accept the fact that it is anti-God, anti-freedom and the Satanic symbol of op pression, immorality, degradation and death." Ms. Kutcher asked if we are attempting to draw any conclusions from the material sent to "The Exchange" on this subject and won dered if we agreed with her pastor who says that "a symbol can have any meaning which may be given to it at any time and place in history so long as it receives group accept ance."
