EXTENSIVE PLEOMORPHIC ADENOMA IN A YOUNG MAN

2020
Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor with variable cytomorphologic and architectural appearance. This tumor occurs in individuals of all ages but is most common in the third to sixth decades of life. We describe the case of a 19-year-old man patient with symptomatic swelling in palate (transition) measuring approximately 4 cm. After incisional biopsy, the histopathologic evaluation revealed that the tumor was composed of variable epithelial and myoepithelial/stromal components in a mixture of patterns, which led to the diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma. The tumor was treated by conservative surgical resection. In 2 years of follow-up, there was no tumor recurrence. Although it is more common in women older than 40 years, detailed clinical examination in all patients can lead to early diagnosis, which avoids extensive operations and decreases the risk of malignant transformation.
