Maxillary sinusitis: a study of bacteria and antibiotic sensitivity

2011
A bacteriologic study of maxillary sinusitis using aspiration method and culture was carried out from 93 antra out of 59 patients. This resulted in 83.3 % positive cultures of acute cases in which 57.2 % of Streptococcus pneumoniae were isolated. The predominant isolates in subacute group were 33.3 % streptococci groups, 33.3% Hemophilus infl uenzae and 22.2 % anaerobes. In chronic cases, 71.4 % of positive cultures were obtained with the predominant isolates of Hemophilus infl uenzae, 50 % of children and 29.8 % of adult cases. Antibiotic sensitivity tests showed all isolated microorganisms responded well to the antibiotics commonly used in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infection.
