Designing microwave absorber shape by using optimization

2017
Microwave absorbers are used inside of anechoic chamber along its wall, ceiling and floor to perform EMC / EMI measurements. Anechoic chambers are also used to perform measurements for EMC / EMI requirements of spacecraft on-orbit. Wedge and pyramidal type absorbers are commonly used type of absorbers to cover chamber walls. Shape of them is one of major factor to absorb energy of incident EM wave. New absorber shapes can help to improve absorption performance of absorbers and provide accuracy of measurements. In this study, an alternative microwave absorber shape is obtained by using optimization methods. Reflection characteristic of new designed absorber is presented. Absorber is analyzed by using Periodic Moment Method (PMM). 2–10 GHz frequency band is considered for reflection value calculations of absorber. TM mode normal incidence case electromagnetic waves are employed for the calculations within the 2–10 GHz frequency band. Bistatic pattern characteristics of absorber are presented at 2, 4, and 6 GHz. Using optimization methods to obtain optimized power function shaped absorber is an important contribution of the study.
