Necrotizing fasciitis caused by emphysematous pyelonephritis through iliopsoas abscess

2011
Abstract Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection characterized by continuous propagation within soft tissues resulting in necrosis of the fascia and fat. The disease is associated with a high mortality rate because of its acute and rapidly progressive course [1]. Whereas necrotizing fasciitis is caused by trauma to the skin and surgical wounds in the perineum and lower extremities [2], it can develop secondary to deep infection or malignancy [3]. The inflammatory condition may involve the soft tissue layers of the pelvis, abdomen, extremities, or other sites. However, it is difficult to diagnose in the early stage.
