Transition of the proximate determinants of fertility in Morocco

1997
Fertility levels have declined considerably in Morocco since the beginning of the 1980s with the level of total fertility falling from 5.6 children per woman in 1979-80 to 3.3 in 1995. The observed fertility decline has occurred across all segments of society. Using proximal determinants to study fertility changes in Morocco this study analyzes fertility levels and trends at the national level as well as at the level of sociodemographic determinants explores the transition in these determinants and estimates the relative roles of various proximal determinants in fertility change observed in Morocco. The Bongaarts model is employed to decompose fertility decline in order to attribute the appropriate aspects to each determinant. Chapters discuss the demographic situation and population policy fertility levels and trends the Bongaarts model and results and application of the model. According to the Bongaarts model more than half the fertility reduction experienced in Morocco is the result of an increased level of contraceptive practice.
