High gain superstrate aperture antenna/array for 79-GHz applications

2015
In this paper a high-gain superstrate aperture antenna/array at 79 GHz are proposed. A superstrate layer of Rogers 6010-LM with optimum size is added above basic aperture antenna, which induced a significant effect on antenna performances. The impedance bandwidth of the aperture antenna with superstrate is found to be 7.4 %, which covers the entire band. The maximum simulated gain of the proposed antenna is 14.8 dBi with an efficiency of 85% at 79 GHz. The use of superstrate increased the CST simulated gain by nearly ∼ 8.55 dB at 79 GHz. Furthermore, the gain is improved to 16.8 dBi by using a 2 × 2 antenna array with an optimized superstrate size. The estimated efficiency of the array is 78% at 79 GHz. The results are verified using HFSS and are in good agreement. The proposed antenna is a good choice for 79 GHz short-range automotive radar applications.
