However, growing concern regarding aminoglycoside toxicity, has led some clinicians to argue that aminoglycosides should be used rarely and replaced by other less toxic but generally more broad-spectrum antibiotics (e.g. carbapenems, broad-spectrum cephalosporins).1 Toxicity includes nephrotoxicity (generally reversible and more predictable, especially with prolonged exposure), and ototoxicity, including vestibular and auditory toxicity (less predictable and may be irreversible).
