The role of new laboratory tests in clinical decision-making.

Both innovative and established quantitative methods are described to analyze not only the technical but also the clinical merits of new laboratory tests. The practicality of the predictive value model and of decision analysis is highlighted through the application of these methods to a common clinical problem, the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia.
