Practical Methods for GIS Education in China - How to Meet Social Need of High Quality Human Resources

2006
GIS, remote sensing and GPS (called 3S) have been widely researched and applied in China, both in military and civil aspects. GIS is usually the direct interface between users and the systems. Universities in China believe there will be a strong demand for professional employees in civil aspects. Many universities have set up a GIS major. The employment problem becomes serious not only to the students themselves, but also to the universities and society. The study analyzes the main problems of GIS education or training in today's China. One is unreasonable course arrangement does not conform to the professional requirements of GIS. Second, many students lack operating skills, and their practical training is insufficient. Third, many universities have little experience in professional training and the quality gap between universities is very large. Last, the education targets are not clear. The study gives solutions to change the situation. First is to provide multi-mode remote sensing education by different organizations, not limited by the staff of universities; to provide teachers or students with training as career planning and development. Second, it is beneficial to set up a professional authentication system both for the teachers and students. A professional authentication system should be found to ensure the quality of education. Finally, it is important for the universities to provide more real practical opportunities for the students.
