STANDARD EVOLUTION OF RED GIANT BRANCH, RED CLUMP AND HORIZONTAL BRANCH STARS

The standard evolution of red giant branch, horizontal branch and red clump stars is reviewed, with emphasis on the challenges posed by recent detailed spectroscopic observations. These data highlight the need to include additional element transport mechanisms beyond simple convective mixing.
