[Maternal health in Francophone Africa: Why a special issue? (editorial)]

This paper introduces a selection of reports of results acquired through a population-based epidemiological survey upon maternal health in Francophone Africa. The selection is based partly upon results of scientific studies conducted with data from the Maternal Mortality in Africa Survey (MOMA) and partly upon exchanges and debates having occurred between fieldworkers and researchers.
