Simulation-based Crisis Resource Management in Pharmacy Education, an Innovative Approach to Team Training

Objectives. Teamwork is central to patient safety in healthcare and pharmacy education must implement innovative teaching methods to address this educational imperative. Simulation-based crisis resource management (CRM) training helps promote team collaboration and patient safety awareness by recreating clinical situations that highlight CRM principles. This education brief discusses strategies for implementation of simulation-based CRM in pharmacy education and presents students' appreciation of an interdisciplinary CRM training at Laval University, Canada.Findings. The key concepts of CRM can be organized in four broad categories, namely team management, resource allocation, awareness of environment and dynamic decision-making. At our institution, we have developed over 20 scenarios targeting various CRM principles.
