Are cirrhotic patients awaiting liver transplantation protected against vaccine-preventable diseases?
2018
Abstract Cirrhotic patients are immunocompromised and have an increased risk of infection with higher morbidity and mortality. Few data are available regarding the protection and vaccination of patients awaiting liver transplantation. In our center, 222 patients were questioned about their history of previous diseases and vaccinations. The ELISA method was used to determine hepatitis A and B (HBV, HAV) and tetanus antibody levels. Despite French vaccination recommendations, only a few cirrhotic patients are immunised. Serological protection against HAV and tetanus reached 74.2% and 78.1%, respectively but was only 34.4% for HBV. These findings underline the important need for vaccination management in this population.
