2012
feeding by gastrostomy or jejunostomy or oral nutritional supplements (ONS). Results: We analyzed 31 patients (28 men), all of them with advanced esophageal cancer (T4 N+), 20 squamous cell carcinoma. All of them received dietary advice and some type of nutritional support. Patients with severe dysphagia were 64.5% and received artificial nutrition support while 35.5% received ONS. The 80% of patients who used enteral tube feeding received between 75% and 100% of energy requirements by this method. The type of tube feeding was in 60% surgical jejunostomy of patients and gastrostomy in 30%. Conclusion: Enteral tube feeding was not mandatory in all advanced esophageal cancer patient on radical treatment. Severity of dysphagia was the symptom which determines the type of nutrition support and not the cell types or tumor location. In patients who might be candidates for surgical salvage the way of nutrition support is the jejunostomy. Is necessary to plan nutritional support before the beginning of cancer treatment, if not this could lead to disruption and loss of treatment efficiency.
