The Trauma-Informed Examination

2020
The gynecological examination can be stressful or triggering for a patient who has experienced sexual trauma. Clinicians can make accommodations for patients with sexual trauma at all stages of the appointment, including during registration, history-taking, conducting the examination, and follow-up communication. Drawing upon the work of the EMPOWER Clinic for Survivors of Sex Trafficking and Sexual Violence, this chapter provides suggestions for better supporting patients with sexual trauma during a gynecological visit, from the scheduling of an appointment through the physical examination itself. These best practices demonstrate the basics of trauma-informed care, which can be incorporated into a variety of clinical settings.
