The upper class of lower Remuera in the 19th century

2010
In the 1880s, Lower Remuera was the area at the lower end of Victoria Avenue going down towards the beach and later became known as Wilson's Point. The chief property [Lot 92 - see map] belonged to Joseph Liston Wilson, (or 'Holy Joe' to the locals) who was the newspaper magnate who owned the New Zealand Herald. His mansion was Roselle, and was built in the 1880s. Next door was Tremough, [Lot 93 -see map], the property that belonged to Captain Thomas Capel Tilly, RN. Other neighbours included the Hon E Mitchelson, 'the gum merchant' at Waiaramoa (opposite Roselle) on 30 acres of land with his family; the large house belonging to Captain Worsp at Burwood, the late T Morrin's residence at the Point; and RC Carr, (in his fine concrete house) and family. All these families regularly came together at church, the many garden parties, the 'At Homes', weddings, dances, balls, euchre evenings, regattas, and picnics.
