Methods: Cross-sectional study with population samplesfrom five random neighborhoods of a capital of northeastern Brazil. Validated questionnaire "Diagnosis ofprimary hyperhidrosis". Results: Of 1330 individuals, 34.2% men and 65.8% women. The prevalence of PHwas 17% among men, 14.9% among women and had an overall value of 15.9%. The average age of theinterviewees was 25.9 ± 10.2 years. The age of onset occurred mainly between 0 and 19 years of age. Bothbilateral sweating and worsening symptoms with stress showed significant values (p<0.05). Sweating wasmainly bilateral, at least once a week and worsened by stress (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of PH inthe sample population was 15.9%, similar in both sexes and, in most cases, bilateral. The onset of symptomsoccurred mainly during childhood and adolescence, with negative implications for daily activities, and theprimary symptoms of hyperhidrosis are exacerbated by stress.
