Analysis and design of a predictive CCM power factor correction converter

An alternative PFC controller with predictive control is proposed in this paper. Based on the principle of the boost converter in CCM, the realization of this control strategy is discussed. This predictive control strategy can foresee the required duty cycle according to the sensed input current, the input voltage and the output voltage. The key blocks in this novel predictive PFC controller are presented and analyzed in detail. An enhanced power factor is achieved by using a simplified predictive algorithm. This predictive PFC controller is designed and simulated in 0.25μm BCD process. Simulation results show that the power factor of a typical application is over 0.99, while the Total Harmonic Distortion is under 12%.
