The invention relates to a method for producing a resulting image to a predetermined, virtual X-ray quanta energy distribution, a corresponding computer program, a data carrier and an X-ray image pickup device. The method comprises the steps of: - acquiring a first image data set of patients representing a first X-ray attenuation distribution of the patient according to a first X-ray quanta energy distribution, - sensing at least one second image data set representing the patient at least one second X-ray attenuation distribution of the patient corresponding to at least a second X-ray quanta energy distribution, - setting a virtual x-ray quantum energy distribution, - determining a spatial density distribution of the patients for at least two materials on the basis of the first and at least a second image data set, - generating a third image data set of the patient on the basis of predetermined, virtual X-ray quanta energy distribution and the determined spatial material density distributions, wherein the third image data set representing a third X-ray attenuation distribution of patients according to the predetermined virtual x-ray quantum energy distribution, and - generating the virtual image of the third image data set.
