Root Separation and Cast Post-and-core Crown for Mandibular Molar with Severe Defect

Objective:To investigate the curative effectiveness of mandibular molar with severe defect treated by root separation and cast post-and-core crown.Methods:23mandibular molars with severe defect agreed with the criteria we set were selected.Root separation or tooth hemisection was performed after root canal therapy and other basic periodontal therapies.Crown lenthening surgery was also done when needed.6weeks later,the teeth were restored with cast post-and-core connected crown.Results:Investigated for at least 2years,all of the teeth functioned very well except 1failed and another missed.Conclusion:Root separation and cast post-and-core crown can effectively save mandibular molar with severe defect.
