A process for manufacturing absorbent articles; comprising each article (2) absorbing a soft cover (3) retention, having a first and a second face (4, 5) which are opposite one another and consist of at least one sheet of material and one pad (6 ), the latter being inside the cover (3) between the faces (4, 5) first and second and obtained from at least one absorbent material; the method comprises the steps of feeding the absorbent material to a device (13) to form batts (6), and identifying and rejecting items (2) absorbent defective; transferring the articles (2) rejected to a comminution device (20) in order to obtain shredded material from the rejected items (2); and feeding the shredded material to the device (13) forming together with the absorbent material for making the pads (6), wherein each of the batts (6) consists of at least three layers (7,8, 9) one above the other; comprising at least a first layer (8) of the layers (7, 8, 9) shredded material in an intermediate position between a second and a third layer (7, 9), both external to the pad (6), the material being disposer completely absent from the second and third layers (7, 9).
