Hypoxic conditions during kidney development disrupt nephron formation

Aim: To determine the effect of hypoxia on nephron endowment. Conclusions: Activation of the hypoxic response pathway results in a block in the mesenchyme to epithelial transition required for nephron formation. This may be due to ER stress associated degradation of key signaling molecules such as Wnt9b.
