Anthelmintic activity of essential oils of Cymbopogon citratus and Ocimum sanctum on Fasciola gigantica, in vitro

2010
The effect of essential oils of Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass) and Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) on Fasciola gigantica was assessed. The anthelmintic effect was evaluated in comparison with control and score index was made based on gross motility. The morphological variation and histopathological changes of treated fluke was assessed. The essential oil of lemon grass showed a potential anthelmintic activity in vitro whereas tulsi oil did not show any effect. In vitro studies revealed that 1% lemon grass oil showed an anthelmintic effect on live Fasciola gigantica.
