Relationships between hippocampal shape and cognitive performance in drug-naive patients with Alzheimer's disease

2012
the total brain (P1⁄40.006) and greaterMD for the hippocampus (P1⁄40.006 left; P1⁄40.01 right), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (P1⁄40.0007 left; P1⁄40.002 right), left posterior cingulate (P1⁄40.02) and the right putamen (P1⁄40.02). Further adjustment for stroke, hypertension, and MI produced similar results. Conclusions: Diabetes is associated with smaller GM volume, total brain volume, greater atrophy. Micro-structural measures revealed reduced FA for total WM and greater MD in regions associated with memory and executive function, in particular in the hippocampus and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Further studies are needed to determine if these structural changes associated with diabetes predict risk of cognitive decline.
