Ultrafast diagnostics of shock waves in laser beams

Certain features of optical methods for studying strong, ionizing shock waves are discussed. A comparative study is reported of the methods of multiple-frame high-speed interferometry, shadowgraph photography, and Schlieren photography for diagnostics of the shock waves which are formed in the spherical irradiation of a target by the high-power nine-channel Kal'mar laser system.
