THE TERRIBLE TOLL OF COVID-19 ON PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES
2021
In the wake of the COVID19 epidemic, everyone will be affected. As a result of the epidemic, people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) are more susceptible to its physical, mental, and social effects. When cognitive deficiencies limit their ability to comprehend information, they must rely on guardians to keep an eye on them while they are quarantined. Individuals on the autistic spectrum may become more defiant, which might increase their risk of dislocation and their need on psychiatric medications if their regular activities are curtailed. Individual communities no longer safeguard identified persons, leaving them open to exploitation by others. In the event of future pandemics, the impact of COVID19 on people with IDs should be taken into consideration. People with ID and those who care for them will be better prepared to deal with future epidemics of infectious diseases if evidence is gathered in a methodical manner.
