Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Catalytic Properties of a New Cobalt (II) 1D Coordination Polymer

2013
A new 1D coordination polymer, [CoCl2(bbbm)2]n·(DMF)n (1) (bbbm = 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1H-benzimidazole), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic system with space group P–1, the unit cell parameters: a = 9.4960(8), b = 9.8786(9), c = 13.8975(12) A, α = 79.9030(10)˚, β = 70.6170(9)˚, γ = 73.4910(10)˚, V = 1174.36(18) A3, and Z = 2. In this structure, each cobalt atom is in a tetrahedral geometry, one-dimensional linear chains were constructed by bbbm ligand with bis(monodentate) coordination mode and then linked via C–H···Cl hydrogen bonding into a 2D supramolecular motif. Degradation of Congo Red (CR), an azo dye in aqueous solution, is investigated by a Fenton-like process using complex 1 as the catalyst and sodium persulfate as the oxidant.
