Lecturers’ Development at Public Universities in Vietnam (1986 - 2020): Current Situation and Solution

Improving the quality of the contingent of lecturers at universities and colleges has always been concerned and focused on by countries around the world, considering this human resource "laying the foundation" for the construction, training fostering, and developing high-quality human resources to meet the international integration process in the context of the industrial revolution 4.0 which has a strong impact on all areas of social life. As one of the developing countries, Vietnam has recently seen many social and political tensions created to make universities more academically and financially autonomous to operate and compete equally with real private schools in training human resources for socio-economic development. This article provides an insight into the current state of higher education development in Vietnam (1986 – 2020), especially the teaching staff of public universities. Based on analyzing and evaluating the current situation of the quantity, quality, proportion, and structure of the teaching staff of public universities in Vietnam today, the author gives some basic solutions to continue to develop. To develop the contingent of lecturers at public universities to meet the current requirements of higher education reform in Vietnam.
