Initiation of a program of simulator-interfaced instruction and research

1994
The American Electric Power Corporation and Centerior Energy Corporation are working with the nuclear engineering programs at the University of Cincinnati (UC) and the Ohio State University (OSU) to develop a unique program of simulator-interfaced instruction and research. The technical focus of the program is on the systems and techniques required for the safe and efficient operation of light water power reactors. Funding and resources are being provided by the US Department of Energy and the two aforementioned corporations. This effort is unique in the following aspects: (1) it was the first statewide collaboration of Ohio nuclear utilities working with Ohio nuclear engineering programs. (2) It was the first to use video classrooms on OSU and UC campuses with classroom-to-classroom two-way video and audio communication link. (3) It has team-taught courses with instructors on both campuses making real-time presentations to students on both campuses. (4) It utilized three full-scope, utility-owned reactor simulators as an integral part of the program.
