Comparative Study on Wind Averaging Conversion between Engineering Sciences Data Unit (ESDU) Gust Factor Method and Statistical Approach

2014
This paper presents the comparison of wind averaging conversion between Engineering Sciences Data Unit (ESDU) gust factor method and statistical approach. It illustrates the use of ESDU gust factor method (WMO guidelines) and the proposed formula based on probability and statistics to convert gust wind speed from collected wind speed data in Mandalay region. The annual maximum hourly wind speed data from 1993 to 2012 are collected from six meteorological stations namely Mandalay, Meiktila, Myingyan, Pyin Oo Lwin, Yamethin and Mogok. The ESDU gust factor method (WMO guidelines) and Statistical approach are used for converting gust wind speed between various averaging periods. The results show that statistical approach gives higher values in compared with ESDU gust factor method (WMO guidelines) for converting 10-minute gust wind speed from collected wind speed data to estimate design wind speed.
