Introducing the Material in Maths Inside

2020
This chapter explores the design and implementation of the Maths Inside Project in more detail, including how we developed productive partnerships with other sectors connected to our work. We outline the different topics comprising the Maths Inside program and discuss the process by which modules and topics were selected as well as their relevance to contemporary issues. We go on to outline how the development of the resources was linked to the specific needs of Australian Curricula and the practical needs of teachers delivering them in classrooms. The chapter includes synopses of the eight topics that form the output of learning resources of the project, including their aims, alignment to the Australian National Curriculum and examples of the rich tasks in each. We outline in more detail the reasoning that led us to focus on rich learning tasks as the key lever in increasing the engagement of students in their mathematics learning, including a discussion of the possible advantages and disadvantages of this approach compared to other pedagogies. We also identify the key principles that underpinned the development of the materials for the project.
