Surface instabilities of a stressed cylindrical whisker

1997
Abstract The energy variation of a cylindrical whisker is calculated when sinusoidal fluctuations appear on its lateral surface. Calculation demonstrates that, beyond a critical value σp 0, the applied stress allows the surface to develop instabilities of short wavelengths. A kinetic study of the surface evolution has been performed to characterize the development of these instabilities when surface diffusion occurs.
