An overview of computer-guided total intravenous anesthesia and monitoring devices—drug infusion control strategies and analgesia assessment in clinical use and research

2020
Abstract Anesthesia, a clinical procedure used daily on millions of people worldwide, can be prone to error because of inter- and intrapatient variability, despite being a familiar routine for anesthesiologists. Both medical specialists and engineering researchers have carried out major efforts to improve anesthesia optimization and decrease the risks for the patients. Computer-guided drug administration tools are the result, just as decision support systems for anesthesiologists during induction and maintenance of total intravenous anesthesia. They are still not mature to be integrated in daily clinical procedures and widely used, but the recent developments are promising, as discussed in this chapter.
