ABSTRACT Background: To evaluate the transobturator sling used for the correction of urinary incontinence. Methods: The cases oftransobturator synthetic sling performed at the Evangelical Hospital of Curitiba in the year of 2004 were reviewed. The surgeryconsisted in the placement of a strip of polypropilene of 20X1,5cm, in the medium urethra, made manually starting from a screenof 20X20cm. Results: The mean patients’ age was of 51.4 years old. There were no intra-operative complications. In 47patients, 91% were cured, while 9% presented urinary incontinence recurrence after six months. Two (4.25%) patientspresented vaginal erosion. Four (N=47) patients presented urinary tract infection and a patient presented a posterior vaginalwall hematoma. Conclusion: The transobturator synthetic Sling is a simple and effective procedure for the correction of StressUrinary Incontinence after six months of follow-up. The technique used in making of the sling was showed acceptable complicatio nand recurrence rates comparable to those observed with the industrialized sling. Long term followup is required for thevalidation of this technique.
