A method of selecting a host cell to produce a protein composition that has at least one of the following glycosylation characteristics: (i) has a number of G2 structures in the total carbohydrate structures or in the carbohydrate structures at a site of particular glycosylation of the protein molecule of said protein molecules in said protein molecular composition that is at least 5% higher compared to the same amount of protein molecules in at least one protein molecular composition of the same protein molecule isolated from ATCC No. CRL-9096 (CHOdhfr-) when expressed therein; and / or (ii) comprises more than 35% of G2 structures present in the total carbohydrate structures or in the carbohydrate structures at a particular glycosylation site of the protein molecule of the protein molecules in said protein composition; and / or (iii) has a number of G0 structures in the total carbohydrate structures or in the carbohydrate structures at a particular glycosylation site of the protein molecule of said protein molecules in said protein molecular composition that is at least 5% lower compared to the same amount of protein molecules in at least one protein molecular composition of the same protein molecule isolated from ATCC No. CRL-9096 (CHOdhfr-) when expressed therein; and / or (iv) comprises less than 22% of G0 structures present in the total carbohydrate structures or in the carbohydrate structures at a particular glycosylation site of the protein molecule of the protein molecules in said protein composition; and / or (v) comprises an amount of fucose in the total carbohydrate structures or in the carbohydrate structures at a particular glycosylation site of the protein molecule of said protein molecules in said protein molecular composition that is at least 5 % less compared to the same amount of protein molecules in at least one protein molecular composition of the same protein molecule isolated from ATCC No. CRL-9096 (CHOdhfr-) when expressed therein; and / or (vi) comprises at least 2% carbohydrate structures of the total carbohydrate units or at least one particular carbohydrate chain at a particular glycosylation site of the protein molecule of the protein molecules in said molecular composition of protein containing bisector GlcNAc; and / or (vii) has a sialylation pattern that is altered compared to the sialylation pattern of at least one molecular protein composition of the same isolated ATCC protein molecule No. CRL-9096 (CHOdhfr-) when expressed therein, where - it has an increased degree of sialylation, with an amount of NeuNAc in the total carbohydrate structures or in the carbohydrate structures at a particular glycosylation site of the protein molecule of the protein molecules in said composition molecular protein that is at least 15% higher compared to the same amount of protein molecules in at least one protein molecular composition of the same protein molecule isolated from ATCC No. CRL- 9096 (CHOdhfr-) when expressed in the same; or - it has a decreased degree of sialylation, with an amount of NeuNAc in the total carbohydrate structures or in the carbohydrate structures at a particular glycosylation site of the protein molecule of the protein molecules in said protein molecular composition which is at least 15% lower compared to the same amount of protein molecules in at least one protein molecular composition of the same protein molecule isolated from ATCC No. CRL-9096 (CHOdhfr-) when expressed therein; by the following steps (a) introducing into at least two different host cells that provide a divergent glycosylation pattern at least one nucleic acid encoding a protein or at least a part thereof; wherein at least one of said host cells is an immortalized human blood cell selected from the group consisting of DSM ACC2858 (GT-2X), DSM ACC2806 (NM-H9D8), DSM ACC2807 (NM-H9D8-E6) cell lines, DSM ACC2856 (NM-H9D8-E6Q12) or a cell or cell line derived therefrom; and (b) culturing said at least two different host cells, wherein each different host cell produces a protein composition having a divergent glycosylation pattern of the glycosylation pattern produced by the other host cell; (c) isolating said expressed protein compositions bearing a different glycosylation pattern from the at least two different host cells; and (d) selecting said host cell that produces a protein composition that has at least one of the glycosylation characteristics defined in (i) to (vii).
