Versatile waveguide design for optical amplification

Optical amplification in novel rare-earth-doped waveguides is demonstrated. Design and measurements of an Erbium/Ytterbium co-doped glass waveguide amplifier are presented. The benefits of the design as applied to low-cost amplification are discussed.
