Dennis Lee Mitchell: Natural Fragments

2008
Ceramic sculptor Dennis Lee Mitchell's work is discussed. Based on the humblest of natural forms, the tree, Mitchell's work is a series of fragments suggesting broken pieces of tree trunks and branches, chunks of wood and stripped bark. They are not quite right, though. Spend a little time with Mitchell's work and the parts start to morph into other things: stone, skin and bones. Mitchell's sculptures are about surfaces, what lies on them and under them, within and outside of them and, most of all, it is about the interface between these worlds.
