Multi-component load cells have recently received attention in various engineering fields, especially in robotics. This paper describes the design process and evaluation results of a separating sensing type six-component load cell. The finite element deformation analysis is conducted for predicting strain outputs and coupling strains of the loadcell. To match the output sensing strains from six component loads and minimize coupling strains, the location of strain gages is determined and the strain gages are connected so that bridge circuits with four strain gages would be balanced. Design modifications resulted in similar strain sensitivities for all six-component forces and moments and reduced coupling errors.
