Obsessive-compulsive disorder : Psychodermatology

1996
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that is estimated to affect 2% to 3% of the general population in the United States. New treatment options, particularly behavior therapy and pharmacotherapy, significantly have improved the clinical outcome for the majority of patients. Certain individuals suffering from OCD or an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder are highly likely to consult a dermatologist. Typical symptoms and signs of OCD that a dermatologist may observe include neurotic excoriations, trichotillomania, acne excoriee, eczemas, fear of contamination, concern with body odor, and onychotillomania. The dermatologist familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of OCD in clinical practice will reduce the significant morbidity associated with this common disorder.
