Next-Generation Sequencing Enabled Genetics in Hexaploid Wheat

2019
Abstract Wheat is a major world food crop and its production needs to increase to meet future demand. However, having a large complex genome, the analysis of bread wheat is not without its challenges. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has provided the means for the genomic analysis of wheat to determine genes/markers underpinning key agricultural traits. Here we review the research that has been conducted on wheat utilizing NGS to advance its genetic improvement. We cover the use of NGS-enabled techniques such as mapping-by-sequencing, TILLING, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and genome-wide DNA methylation and transposable element profiling.
