Abstract The corrosion of mild steel in ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME)-water mixtures has been investigated. Below 5% water, no attack occurred. Between 5 and 20% water, localized attach resulted. Above 20%, water uniform attack took place. Viscosity, conductivity and dielectric measurements were carried out to investigate the physicochemical properties of the solutions and to relate these properties to the nature of the corrosion process. Impedance techniques were used to confirm the models presented. A rapid test using a EGME-water-sodium chloride mixture for screening corrosion inhibitive pigments is outlined.
