Establishment and comparision of terminal aneurysm models in canines and rabbits

2013
Objective To establish and compare terminal aneurysm models in canines and rabbits. Methods Terminal aneurysm models in 10 canines and 25 rabbits were established by using an arterial pouch pre-digested in vitro with combined elastase and collagenase. Results Ten terminal aneurysm models in canines were established, and one model ruptured at the first day after the construction. The aneurysmal models enlarged from the initial diameters of (5.20 ±0.37) mm (n =10) to (5.42 ±0.42) mm (n =9) at 3rd week after establishment (P > 0.05).Twenty-five terminal aneurysm models in rabbits were established, and three models ruptured at the first day,14th day and 16th day respectively after the construction. The aneurysmal models enlarged from the initial diameters of (2.10 ± 0.22) mm (n =25) to (3.02 ±0.36) mm (n=22) at 3rd week after establishment (P<0.05).Conclusion The successful rate of terminal aneurysm models in our group is high and the cost is low.The models are quite similar to the human intracranial aneurysm morphologically and pathologically. The models in canines endure more, have a high survival rate and are very useful for the study of angiography and embolization. The models in rabbits could spontaneously grow and rupture and are very useful for the study of histology and pathology.
