The goal of this project was to study novel antimicrobial peptides of the lugworm Arenicola marina (Annelida, Polychaeta). In acidic extracts of coelomocytes the presence of an amy of cationic antimicrobial fractions was detected Five oi them were purified, their exact molecular weights (1161, 1450, 2000, 2450, 3630 Da) were estimated. An analysis of their antimicrobial activity revealed that all of them are strongly toxic against gram-negative Escherichia coli and in a less degree so against gram-positive Listeria monocytogenes.
