Environmental impact of Ukai-Kakrapar project

1983
India's Kakrapar Weir and Canals Project began in 1954 to provide seasonal irrigation. The beneficial effects have been: (1) an increase in irrigation potential, (2) the creation of 300 MW of peaking hydroelectric power, (3) water supplies to a large number of industries and towns, (4) partial flood control for downstream areas, and (5) numerous indirect benefits from development of the area. Adverse effects include: (1) water-logging connected with a rise in subsoil water level and salinity, and propagation of diseases, (2) air and some water pollution from rapid economic development, and (3) the loss of forest area. Corrective measures are underway to counteract these adverse effects. 1 figure, 1 table.
