Global fibre transmission using optically amplified regenerators for maximised repeater spacing

A global fibre transmission experiment consisting of optically amplified electronic regenerators has been demonstrated for the first time transmitting 5 Gbit/s NRZ data with a extended span of > 200 km to a distance of 500 000 km.
