Triphasic versus monophasic oral contraceptives

1987
300 women between the ages of 15-35 were included in a open randomized multicenter study. 1/2 of the group received a triphasic contraceptive the other 1/2 a conventional monophasic contraceptive. Both were considered low-dose preparations. The women were followed up for 1 year with regular controls. The authors found no difference in side effects between the 2 types of contraceptives. Compliance was equivalent. The new triphasic contains 30% less hormone/user period as compared to the monophasic alternative. For this reason the authors believe that the triphasic preparation is the drug of choice for those women in need of a safe oral contraceptive. (authors modified) (summary in ENG)
