Stan katatonii u pacjentki z uprzednio rozpoznaną padaczką lekooporną

2014
Abstract Objective The aim of the paper is to present the case of a patient, diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy, which raised diagnostic uncertainties when additional symptoms occurred. The case has confirmed the efficacy of a multidisciplinary approach to the patient and the usefulness of cooperation between departments. Case The article describes the case of a 55-year-old patient who has been treated for drug-resistant epilepsy for over 30 years. However, sudden changes in her behavior, seizures, and eventually catatonia necessitated detailed re-diagnosis, including psychiatric consultation. Modified pharmacotherapy resulted in an overall improvement in the patient's clinical condition. Discussion Skillfully conducted diagnostics allow for the introduction of appropriate treatment, which, when accurate, helps patients’ recovery and reduces hospitalization time. In catatonic schizophrenia, it is important to differentiate between the catatonic state and other disorders, such as encephalitis, metabolic disorders, poisoning or epilepsy. Therefore electroencephalography should be regularly used in patients with catatonia.
